  Did you know...
The traditional holidays, rooted deep in folklore, are more prevalent in rural Bulgaria than in the cities and tend to relate to the harvest and health. One of the most attractive rituals is the 'Koukeri' - men disguised in animal skins and furs, wearing grotesque painted masks, do the rounds of the villages banging loud bells to ward off evil spirits and ensure a good crop. Other famous Bulgarian dance is 'Nestinari', which dance on burning embers to mark the beginning of summer on the feast of Saints Constantine and Elena. Even sophisticated city folk will get up at a wedding to join in the 'Horo' - a dance in a circle to folk music.
Events

Hotel Verona is proud of our focus on local events and encourages clients to attend as many as possible to get a better understanding of the local culture.

Ravadinovo Village Festival, mid May

Ravadinovo Village Festival, mid May: The small village of Ravadinovo is only 5 km away from Sozopol, and was started from Bulgarian refugees coming from present day Turkey and Greece in the beginning of the century. The festival is a meeting point for all villagers boasting traditional food, music, and games including wrestling in the village square. Except for locals, this is not a widely popular event, which would allow you to experience genuine Bulgarian culture.

Petrova Niva Folk Festival, August 19

Festivities mark the anniversary of the Ilinden - Preobrazhenie Uprising for the liberation of Bulgarian territories from Turkey. A scenic drive about an hour away in the beautiful Stranja Mountain would take you to another very authentic experience. Folk dancers and musicians from all over the country, from small villages to big cities, perform at a scenic open air stage for two days. While enjoying traditional Bulgarian food and goodies in the area leading to the stage, bursting out of spontaneous dances and songs are commonplace. Also enjoy a church, museum, and a monument, as well as official visits from famous Bulgarian politicians. We provide 1 and 2 day trips to Petrova Niva.

Appolonia Arts Festival, Sep 1 – Sep 10

This is the landmark event for Sozopol, which draws in artists and art lovers from all over the country and gives the town of Sozopol a special atmosphere during this time. The festival shows a wide variety of achievements in Bulgarian art – from traditional to modern. Every night there is a plethora of options, some of which are in an open air stage: a theater performance, a jazz or a chamber concert, a presentation of a new book, a ballet performance, art workshops. Over the 10 days of the festival, there are as many as fifty cultural events. Hotel Verona can help you choose among events or help secure tickets in advance.

Hotel Verona is committed to help customers experience local cultural events. Whether it's through organizing tours, booking event tickets, or simply by making recommendations, we can make a difference in how you enjoy these unforgettable events.
